Happy hump day everyone!
I'm only a couple days away from attempting my first ever 75 mile bicycle ride. I have a few challenges to overcome on this ride and I'm really looking forward to giving it my best shot. Firstly, I've ridden to 50/55 mile rides this year and my thighs always cramp up around mile 40-45. I've been able to pedal/push through the cramps, but I'd much rather avoid them altogether! After some reading and research, I think the problem is that I'm losing too much salt because of my extremely heavy perspiration (sweating). I plan to pack several packets of Gatorade mix and I also picked up some drink mix tablets from Nasbar to get some extra sodium during the ride. The second challenge is that I've never ridden more than 55 miles in one day. If I can make it through the cramps, I think I'll successfully complete the 75 miles.
I also picked up arm and leg warmers from Nasbar in a lovely black spandex-like material that matches my cycling shorts. With the temperatures dropping here in Ohio already, I think I may have to start the race with these warmers to keep me from getting too cold. I'm sure they will come off by the time I get half way through the ride as the temperature climbs. I'm really looking forward to challenging myself!
